Mumbai Metro update

With the fate of the second metro corridor uncertain, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is speeding up work on the third corridor from Colaba to SEEPZ via Bandra.
Pegged at Rs.24,500 crore, construction on the 33.5-km fully underground Colaba-Bandra-Seepz line is expected to start next year. It is likely to be developed on cash-contract basis with a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Construction
“We expect construction on the third line to start in a year, while the second line is not likely to start in next two to three year if the contract is cancelled,” said a senior MMRDA official.
The MMRDA has asked the state government to scrap the contract for the second corridor blaming the contractor for not starting work since 2010. The cabinet sub-committee on infrastructure is expected to take a decision on this soon.
This is the second big infrastructure project developed through the PPP model to fall flat on its face this year. The Worli-Haji Ali sea link has also fallen through with the state government expected to cancel the contract this month.
