Jio crosses 100m users

Led by free voice and data services, Mukesh Ambani's telecom venture Reliance Jio managed to cross 100-million in subscribers, achieving the number in less than six months of its launch.
He had publicly expressed his desire to cross the 100-million mark, when the company announced its official launch on September 1 last year.

Jio, which marked Ambani's second coming in the telecom business, has had a high decibel run in the market. While its free services offering -especially the lifetime zero charges on voice calling -virtually took the steam out of the traditional telecom business, the company has been embroiled in a bitter war of words with the older telecom companies such as Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular.

While the subscriber acquisition success has been quick for the company, many analysts have expressed doubts over the sustainability of this momentum once the company starts charging customers, many of whom use the services on a second SIM card. If billing happens post-March, when the company's second free offering ends, then it will be a real test for the company to not only retain the existing subscriber base but also add new ones at the same pace. While Jio has blamed the call failures on rivals (due to which Trai has recommended a Rs.3,050 crore penalty on Airtel, Vodafone and Idea), there have also been many issues regarding the internet speed on its network.
