In a first for Indian airports, Delhi's IGI Airport crossed the five crore passenger mark last year. The sprawling airport with three runways and as many terminals handled 5.5 crore passengers, with Mumbai a distant second at 4.4 crore.
According to the Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd, IGIA saw 4 crore domestic and 1.5 crore international flyers during January-December, 2016.This was 21% higher than the 4.6 crore passengers it handled in 2015.
Delhi's record comes at a time when India set new highs for both domestic and international air travel in 2016 thanks to low oil prices that allowed airlines to offer cheap fares.
While domestic air travel, dependent on oil prices that determine airfares, has grown at over 20%, international traffic has also seen a steady growth at 10%. Delhi and Mumbai alone accounted for two-third of the air traffic in India, as they together handled almost 10 crore of the total 15 crore fliers.
