Of I-Day Sales....

Diwali may be India's biggest festive season, but for retailers, Independence Day now seems to be the biggest event. Independence Day sales have upstaged Diwali sales for two consecutive years.

Every year big retailers conduct some big sales events when they unleash special promotions and offer deep discounts. For the year ended May 2016, Independence Day week sales clocked in Rs.193 crore while Diwali sales stood at Rs.148 crore, the Nielsen report said.

In the previous year too, Independence Day week recorded Rs.174 crore sales, 46% higher than Diwali and Labour Day sales, it said.

Together, top five big events -Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Diwali, Republic Day and Labour Day :accounted for Rs.714 crore sales for retailers and FMCG companies for the year ended May 2016.

This was a 10% jump from the sales done by retailers for the same period in 2015 as the number of shoppers actively looking for discounts increased to 38% from 35% during this period.

Retailers said burgeoning special sales are not coming at the cost of the festival season but have instead added to the incremental sales for the year.

Event sales in six top cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai, contributed to 91% of total sales.
