The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) is confident that the proposed Rs.2,000 crore Chhatrapati Sambhajiraje International Airport in Purandar will be ready before the one in Navi Mumbai. Nearly 1,200 hectares of land, or 3,000 acres would be required for the proposed airport in Purandar taluka. Its ground-level obstacle survey was completed on November 30.
Addressing a news conference, MADC vice-chairman Vishwas Patil said they were confident that the proposed airport was on track and would be completed in three years, by 2019, ahead of the Navi Mumbai airport. MADC will soon appoint consultants to prepare the detailed project report (DPR) for the site. Officials also said they're confident the rehabilitation package for these villages would be worked out in a month.
The DPR is expected to take six to seven months and then there would be clearances sought for land acquisition.
The district administration's teams that were reviewing various rehabilitation packages are set to submit a report by December 10. The package is expected to be higher than the ready reckoner rate. The present rates in the area are about Rs.20 lakh to Rs.35 lakh per hectare, said Pune district collector Saurabh Rao, who has said Andhra Pradesh's Amravati model and state's Samruddhi model are most ideal models for rehabilitation packages.
While Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had said the Navi Mumbai international airport was on track and had set a deadline of 2019-20, Patil said there were some environmental issues, which will take time, unlike the Purandar site, which is flat and has no obstructions. “For the Navi Mumbai airport, there is an issue of cutting of 92-odd meter high hill, and diversion of river and forest clearance from Union ministry of environment and forests, which might delay the process,“ he said.
On viability in terms of travel, MADC officials said they were confident that the Purandar airport would do well and cater to the district, refuting remarks that the Chakan-Talegaon industrial belt would be better suitable.
Patil said that even as the belt was considered, there was a delay of ten years to take the project forward, and the belt did not get the necessary technical go-ahead, which forced the administration to find another site.
The district administration is confident that the proposed ring roads by MSRDC and PMRDA will bring in better connectivity for Pune city and the distance would be covered in the shortest time.“Almost all the international airports in other states have them in the outskirts, which require travelling of more than 60-70km. Here the distance would be 20-22km, he said.
Fadnavis had earlier said that they would promote the airport as a cargo hub to cater to agriculturists to export their products from this airport to foreign shores.
