NaMo wins Time's readers' poll

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has won Time magazine's 2016 `Person of the Year' online poll a second time. The win has come as a morale-booster for the ruling BJP , which sees it as endorsement of the government's policies not only by Indians but also by people from other countries.
Beating other world leaders including artists and politicians, Modi was voted as Person of the Year by readers of Time, as he emerged as one of the most influential figures of 2016, according to the magazine. Although the magazine's editors will take the final call on who will be the `Person of the Year' but party leaders see the win in the online poll as reiteration that Modi's popularity remains intact even after serving as the country's PM for two-and-half years. This is despite several controversial decisions like surgical strikes against POK-based terror camps followed by demonetisation of two high denomination notes.
Modi had won the Time's readers' poll in 2014 as well, securing more than 16% of the almost five million votes cast.
According to the Time magazine, Modi won with 18% of the votes when the poll closed Sunday at midnight. He was placed well ahead of his closest contenders, including US President Barack Obama, US President-elect Donald Trump and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who all received 7% of the “yes“ vote. Modi was also placed far ahead of other prominent figures of this year, like Mark Zuckerberg (2%) and Hillary Clinton (4%).
