Car sales at 54-month high

The festive spirit has added a punch to sales of cars as stronger footfalls at showrooms and new models have seen volumes scale a 54-month high in September. And, led by models such as Toyota Innova, Maruti Brezza and Hyundai Creta, offroaders and utility vehicles have hit an all-time high with a waiting period across many models.
The rush has been more than usual with festivals of Navratras, Dussehra and Diwali falling within the same month (normally they are spread between two months). A healthy monsoon and a pay package bonanza for government employees have fuelled the momentum further.
Sales of cars in September shot up to 1.95 lakh units against 1.69 lakh units in the same month last year, registering a growth of 15%. Sales touched 2.33 lakh units in March 2012.
On the other hand, sales of passenger vehicles -including cars, SUVs and vans -were at 2.78 lakh units in September against 2.32 lakh units in the same month last year, showing a growth of 20%. In March 2012, sales were at 2.95 lakh units.
