Basit provokes

Pakistan High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit set the tone for a possible diplomatic spat around the time the two countries celebrate their independence day , saying his country's independence day this year is dedicated to Kashmir and vowing to continue the “fight“ till the Valley “attains freedom“.
“We dedicate this year's independence day to the struggle of Jammu and Kashmir. Our struggle will continue till J&K gets freedom,“ Basit said in Delhi during celebrations to mark Pakistan's independence day .“The sacrifice of people in Jammu and Kashmir will not go in vain and the struggle in Kashmir will continue till the people get freedom,“ he said.
The state of ties between the two countries can be gauged from the fact that this year India and Pakistan are yet to greet each other on their independence day . This is a glaring departure from the past, given that the neighbours greeted each other on such occasions even during 1947 and 1971 crises. Basit's statement came less than a week after he was summoned by the external affairs ministry over Pakistan's continued support to cross-border terrorism in Kashmir that has fuelled unrest in the Valley .
PM Modi had on Friday denounced Pakistan's actions in Jammu and Kashmir and called for highlighting atrocities in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Balochistan.
“A communication was apparently delivered to our High Commission in Islamabad on August 12. I can only characterise its contents that propose sending supplies to the Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir as absurd,“ external affairs ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup said on Sunday . “India and others in the region have already received enough of Pakistan's trademark exports -international terrorism, cross-border infiltrators, weapons, narcotics and fake currency .We completely and categorically reject this purported communication from the Pakistan foreign ministry .“
