War of airwaves

The government plans to match the anti-India propaganda riding the airwaves from neighbouring countries with a glut of transmitters of its own. An inter-ministerial group is likely to be constituted soon to prioritize infrastructure build-up, including by public broadcaster Prasar Bharati.
Among those likely to be included in the consultation are the national security advisor, and the ministries of defence, home affairs and I&B. The government will invest about Rs 300 crore.
Doordarshan is expected to set up 10 high-power transmitters on the international border and upgrade 25 low-power transmitters. AIR may set up 72 FM transmitters.
I&B secretary Uday Kumar Varma said it was felt a system must be put in place for suggestions on countering anti-India propaganda. “The government believes a strategic plan for the communication needs of border areas was urgently needed and a campaign regarding peculiar issues being faced by the region should be taken up on a priority basis.”
The areas to be covered are those along Pakistan, China, Nepal and Bangladesh.
