Didi orders closure of Ponzi funds

Stung by the Saradha meltdown, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee ordered the closure of 73 Ponzi or multi-level marketing firms in the state within 24 hours. The move came even as the assembly passed a new anti-chit fund bill amid a walk-out by the Left and Congress.
“People do make mistakes. The important thing is to correct that mistake. One who can make amends survives,” she told a special session of the assembly. Mamata is fighting the biggest challenge in her political career as the Saradha bust devastated lakhs of families in rural Bengal and her party leaders are facing the people’s wrath because of their perceived proximity with the Ponzi firm.
In order to make amends, the government passed the West Bengal Protection of Interest of Depositors in Financial Establishments Bill 2013 on Tuesday with the CM assuring speedy implementation. “As soon as the governor returns on May 5, we will send our officials to Delhi and get the bill signed,” she said.
