JNNURM II : Pune's plans

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed water-related infrastructural works worth over Rs 2,000 crore under Phase II of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
Overall, the PMC plans to seek Rs 20,000 crore from the central government in the second phase of the JNNURM to complete water, sewage and transport projects.
To start with, the civic administration has prepared a detailed report for water supply projects. It plans to seek Rs 1,200 crore to implement equitable water supply project in the city and Rs 525 crore to install meter system for domestic water consumers.
The administration has also proposed to construct an underground tunnel from Parvati water works to Pune cantonment water works to avoid wastage of water due to leakages. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 300 crore.
The PMC is also planning to seek funds to augment the capacity of water purification plants at Parvati, Wadgaon and Pune cantonment.
Along with water supply projects, the civic body has plans to seek funds for completion of sewage treatment plants, metro and purchase of buses for the PMPML.
The central government will launch the $40 billion second phase of its urban renewal mission in about four months to cover infrastructure deficit throughout the country and manage huge urbanisation programmes. Phase II of the JNNURM, which will be carried out over the next five years, envisages a larger, more proactive role for the private sector in providing basic services to citizens. Capacity building, creation of municipal cadres in states and active involvement of citizens in the entire process will be essential in JNNURM II.
