In a shocking incident that will put Mumbai to shame, a stray dog was discovered in Meghwadi in Andheri, blinded in both eyes yesterday. An unidentified person had pierced both the dog's eyes with a sharp object, possibly a rod, blinding him.Lalu, who is believed to be six years old, is being treated at the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Parel. When this reporter visited the hospital, he found the dog sprawled motionless in a corner. According to Dr Purushottam Adsu, the dog's eyes seem to have been pierced by an iron rod. He said, "Someone must have tied his mouth and used a sharp object to pierce the eye sockets."The eye globe is completely damaged, blinding the dog permanently. "Lalu will never be able to see again. Even another set of eyes will not help it see," he added.Durga Rai, an animal activist and resident of Meghwadi, used to feed Lalu and other stray dogs. She has filed a complaint with the SPCA to nab the culprits behind this cruel crime. Rai said, "Lalu is the friendliest of all strays in our area. This morning some kids found him with his both eyes damaged. He was fine last evening, so someone must have committed the crime last night.""How can people be so cruel to animals? There are so many cases of animals being attacked by human beings," she added.Dr Yuvraj Kagnikar, SPCA hospital manager said, "We receive nearly 10-15 cases of animals hurt by people every day. Durga Rai has filed a complaint with us, but in the absence of any eyewitnesses it will be impossible to find the offenders."A vet from SPCA informed us that the dog may die of shock. "In such cases, the dogs are in a shock as they have lost their sight. They bang their head over walls, initially and also may die out of shock," he said.What the law saysThe culprit is booked under section 11 & sub-section 1(a) of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960. There is a fine (minimum) of Rs 10 to 50 under sub section 1(a) and Rs 25-100 under sub- section 1L or imprisonment of a term to 3 months or both. The culprit is also booked under section 428 of IPC for killing or maiming an animal of the value of Rs 10, and shall be punished with a jail term of up to two years, informed Senior Inspector Suresh Kadam, SPCA, Parel.
