PCMC ties up with German firm for Pavana river project

The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with international cooperation enterprise GTZ (German Technical Co-operation) for implementing the Pavana river development project on a public-private-partnership (PPP) basis.Ashish Sharma said that five areas have been identified where GTZ can help the PCMC apart from Pavana River Development Project. This includes water recycling where water treated by sewage treatment plants (STPs) can be reused for gardening and other purposes. The GTZ will help in construction of green buildings and it has agreed to station science train at the proposed science park. It has also agreed to provide help for the proposed planetarium, Sharma said. Describing the works which will be taken up as part of the Pavana River Development Project, Juergen Bischoff, principal advisor, GTZ said, “There will be a green belt which will be developed along the river. The second belt near the river will be a entertainment zone. Commercial development will be also undertaken under PPP.” The GTZ has appointed Associate Real Estate Pvt. Ltd. for preparing the pre-feasibility study of the project which is expected by the end of this month.According to Sharma, a feasibility report of the five-kilometer stretch of Pavana river from Thergaon to Chinchwadgaon has been prepared which would incur an expenditure of Rs 150 crore. The works to be conducted under the project are construction of Gabian wall, garden development, development of Moraya Gosavi ghat, heritage structures like temples, usage of treated sewage water. “The pre-feasibility study of the project will be completed by the end of this month. It will be implemented in four phases of five-kilometer river stretch each. We plan to invite bids for the project in early part of next year. GTZ, union government and private developer will invest the money for the Pavana river development project. PCMC would not be investing any money into the project,” said Sharma about the funding and implementation of the project.
