Mohali set to get a new road link to the Capital

Mohali will soon get a new road link to New Delhi and another four-lane road to major parts of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) approved in principle both the projects, estimated to cost over Rs 100 crore, at its fourth meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in Chandigarh.
Badal, who is also the chairman of GMADA, gave a formal go-ahead to undertake the land acquisition and construction work to extend the road leading to the upcoming Knowledge City in Sector 81 with the four six-lane roads up to the Kharar-Banur Road and make the road in Punjab territory from PGI to Siswan T-point via Mullanpur a fourlane stretch.
“These projects will be taken up on priority and land acquisition will begin forthwith,” GMADA Chief Administrator Vivek Partap Singh said.He said while the acquisition of over 100 acres required for the four six-lane roads from the Knowledge City to the Kharar-Banur Road had already been accorded approval by the Mohali Deputy Commissioner, the no-objection certificate to acquire land for the PGI Siswan T-point stretch would be procured shortly.
The approximately 6-km stretch from Knowledge City to Kharar-Banur Road will create a new link between Mohali and Delhi via Banur. This link towards south will also serve as an alternate route for commuters going to Ambala, Rajpura, Patiala and other parts of Punjab, Haryana and even Rajasthan from Mohali.
The four-lane road from PGI to Siswan T-point, around 8-km long, will decongest the busy Mohali-Kharar stretch of the National Highway-21 as traffic from Mohali and Chandigarh will reach Kurali through this widened road to approach major parts of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The Chandigarh Administration has already taken up work to widen the portion falling under the union territory. Though no deadline has been fixed yet for completing the projects, the GMADA hopes to create these new links within six months.
At its last meeting in June, the GMADA had approved direct road link from Chandigarh to the National Highway-1 via Mohali besides strengthening, widening and upgrading the peripheral roads crossing through different sectors of Mohali. The work on these roads is already in an advanced stage.
