80 temples razed in Modi’s capital

Bravo ! I truly support this initiative, all illegal structures..temples,mosques,churches should be removed across the country.

Before you call Narendra Modi Hindutva’s posterboy, take this. Gujarat’s capital Gandhinagar has razed to the ground 80 temples or their encroaching boundaries since authorities began a drive against illegal encroachments one month ago. The campaign, which started on October 13, went into top gear on Wednesday when 15 small and medium temples were demolished on two roads. A lesson, perhaps, for twincity Ahmedabad’s civic authorities who have failed to carry out a Gujarat High Court directive against shrines obstructing movement of traffic in the city. A team of officials from Gandhinagar collectorate, police and forest department participate in the demolition drive. A survey conducted by Gandhinagar collectorate officials showed that 107 temples were constructed illegally along the main roads and about 312 in the interior areas of various sectors. All these temples will be removed. Apparently, the first temple was demolished around Diwali and there was not even a mild protest because the demolition was carried out in the dead of night. Six temples around Gh 5 circle and adjoining areas just vanished within hours. This Monday, two JCBs removed the Hanuman temple in sector-5 on Gh Road. The demolition is being done under police protection and any signs of opposition are dealt with swiftly. Collectorate officials said some bigger temples with idols weighing 800 kg were also removed. Gandhinagar collector Sanjeev Kumar says, “this is part of the ongoing drive in which all encroachments will be removed. We will bring down any illegal structure on government land”.
