United Restaurants looks for acquisitions

United Restaurants, the parent company of the US Pizza brand, is looking to acquire fastfood brands that will support its recent diversification into Indian fast food.United Restaurants has earmarked at least Rs 25 crore towards acquisitions, and has already initiated talks to buy out complementary businessesAccording to analysts, target companies include ice-cream brands such as Mumbai-based Naturals and Vadilal, fast food brands such as Wrap ‘n’ Roll and Tibbs Frankie, also Mumbai based, and Bangalore based Kaati Zone.
Meanwhile, United Restaurants is also looking to move beyond pizzas. It has launched two independent Indian fast-food brands — Satvik and Toastyz to sell kaati rolls, aloo parathas, vada pavs, samosas, sandwiches and more.The company, which opened its first US Pizza outlet in Bangalore in 1995, lost out to other players such as Pizza Hut, Pizza Corner and Domino’s Pizza. At present, US Pizza operates 62 outlets across India with 12-15 per cent market share in the branded pizza market. US Pizza plans to open 150 outlets by 2009. United Restaurants plans to open 50 Satvik and 20 Toastyz outlets by March 2009. The company has also tied up with Sweden-based Eastern Food Temptations to export Indian fast food under S Nanda’s brand.
