Delhi:GPS System on Buses

Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has begun the process of Global Positioning System (GPS) mapping of it's fleet .The GPS system has already been fitted on 100 lowfloor DTC buses and is being extended to the rest of the fleet. By 2010, all the 11,000 public buses plying in Delhi will be GPS enabled and their movement will be tracked from a control room. With the facility in place, the exact location of each bus, the speed at which it is running and the exact time taken to complete the assigned trip can be monitored from a centralised control room. This will help check problems of overspeeding, route deviation and non adherence to assigned time tables, all of which are rampant with the DTC as well as Blueline fleets. At present, the 100-odd buses which have been fitted with GPS are all those passing through the pilot Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand. The facility has also been linked to provide inputs for a passenger information system installed at all the bus shelters on the corridor. Through this, the time to be taken by a particular bus to reach the stop is displayed on an electronic board. This, officials say, reduces passenger anxiety as she/he knows exactly how long one will have to wait for a bus on a particular route.
